Cellist with the Paul Winter Consort since 1979, Eugene Friesen has performed in all 40 Winter Solstice Celebrations to date. He has been part of over 30 albums on Paul Winter’s Living Music label, with two solo records: New Friend and Arms Around You, and two Grammys from the Paul Winter Consort albums. He also performs with Trio Globo (Friesen, Howard Levy and Glen Velez), and has worked and recorded with such diverse artists as Dave Brubeck, Toots Thielemans, Betty Buckley, Will Ackerman, Joe Lovano, and Dream Theater, and appeared on Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion” playing with Keillor and superstar soprano Renée Fleming. A love for children and music education led Eugene to create his popular program for young audiences, CelloMan, and has fueled his work teaching new cello techniques and improvisation in the United States, Asia, Europe, Egypt, and South America. He has performed as a soloist at the International Cello Festival in Manchester, England; Rencontres d’Ensembles de Violoncelles in Beauvais, France; the World Cello Congress in Baltimore, Maryland; and the Rio International Cello Encounter in Rio de Janeiro. Also a renowned composer, Friesen teaches on the faculty of the Berklee College of Music.
